Frequently Asked Questions
Here are common questions homeowners ask about stump grinding and what to expect when removing old stumps from the yard.
What is stump grinding?
Stump grinding uses a specialised machine with a rotating cutting wheel to chip the stump into small pieces. The operator moves the wheel back and forth, gradually grinding the stump and main surface roots below ground level. The remaining mulch can be spread, removed or mixed with soil.
How deep should a stump be ground down?
Most stumps are ground down to around 15–30 centimetres below the surface, which is usually enough for new turf or garden beds. Deeper grinding may be requested for future construction or larger planting holes. Depth can depend on stump size, root spread, soil conditions and any buried services.
Can a tree grow back after stump grinding?
Regrowth is much less likely after stump grinding because most of the stump and major surface roots are removed. Some species with vigorous root systems can still send up occasional shoots nearby. These are usually easy to manage with regular mowing or by cutting new shoots as they appear.
Clean, Usable Space Again
Stump grinding involves using a rotating cutting wheel to chip the stump and major roots into small pieces, usually down to several centimetres below soil level. This helps prevent regrowth, removes tripping hazards and makes future digging easier for new work. We assess access, mark services and choose the right machine for the space, including tight, narrow gates and paths.
